Edmonton Rovers were founded in July 1976 by former player David Ashton and current Club Chairman Laurence Hughes when they were 15 & 17-year-old pupils at Edmonton County School.
The club started off by playing one season in the Enfield & District Youth League’s Under-17’s Division before entering the Edmonton Sunday League in 1977, winning a Division 8 League & Cup double in Season 1979-1980.
They then moved to the Haringey & Tottenham Sunday League in 1984, winning a Division Two title in Season 1987-1988 before moving to the much stronger Waltham Sunday League the following season in which they stayed for 28 years without winning a single trophy until that League folded in 2016.
On joining the Barnet Sunday League for Season 2016-2017, a new group of players joined and the club immediately won the Division Two title without losing a match. However, most of those players all drifted away after finding Division One too tough, and after the disruption from Covid, a completely new group of 16 year-old players were brought in to re-start the club in the bottom division for Season 2021-2022. These included the sons and nephews of long-serving players from the 1990’s and that team has now progressed up to Division Two with their squad for the 2025-2026 Season having an average age of just 20.
Edmonton Rovers are famous for being the first Sunday League ‘You Tube’ team, with Club Secretary/Chairman Laurence Hughes (a now-retired professional cameraman) having started filming their matches way back in the mid-1980’s, then uploading highlights of every match to You Tube since 2008, some 10 years before the likes of Palmers, SE Dons & Baiteze Squad started the modern trend. Every match continues to be filmed and uploaded, win or lose !
The club is celebrating it’s 50th year of existence in 2026 and we hope to win a trophy at the end of the 2025-2026 Season to mark that milestone with.
