The Intermediate Cup was introduced as part of a league restructure to better align cup competitions with the growing number of divisions. It provides mid-division teams with a competitive knockout tournament tailored to their level.

Since its introduction, the cup has offered clubs the opportunity to progress deep into a knockout competition and compete for honours against teams of similar standing.
